The daughter of simple farmers, Gida has never been outside of Mercia. It was only recently that she dared venture outside of her home-village in Ledecestrescire. The whole of her early existence focused around helping her parents and sister out on the farm, tending to housework, and occasionally riding to the village market to sell crops. She never learned to read or writer, though she recognizes a few written words, but she was taught to count. In her late teens she was married off to another farmer's son and moved in with his family. Her husband was conscripted to become a soldier and serve the Mercian crown, and after only a few short years of marriage he was dead--fell from his horse into the river and drowned. Taking what little bit of a dowry she had and their infant daughter, Gida returned to her parents' farm. 

Not long after the death of her husband, her father followed him into the grave, leaving only Gida and her mother to tend the farm--her sister had long since married and moved to East Anglia. Between the two of then they were unable to keep up with the taxes, paying for help, and feeding an infant. They made the decision to let the farm go and relocated to the nearby Norse settlement of Ravensthorpe, having heard tale of its recent success and the opportunity for work. Gida was able to find work cooking and cleaning in the Longhouse while her mother stayed home and cared for the child. 

She is the only paid housekeeper in the Longhouse, aided by thralls, though this is in part because the Jarl's sister would never trust a potentially disgruntled slave to handle their food. Unlike the thralls, her duties do not extend to personally attending the jarl or serving his table. She mostly keeps to herself, does her work, and goes home. The Longhouse has been notably cleaner and well-kept since she was taken on.

Born and bred to fight, Bjorn is the product of a long line of Viking warriors. His father sired him off one of his concubines, named him after his long-lost friend, and threw him in the mix with the rest of his brood. From dawn to dusk he was trained to use an axe, starting with chopping wood for precision, and moving up to the butchering of livestock, hunting, and so on. As soon as he was ready, and perhaps a little before then in truth, he was taken to go-a-vikingr. His first blood was at the ripe age of thirteen and went on to add countless others. 

By the time he was a man grown he and his family had come to settle among The Raven Clan in Fornburg, Norway under the jurisdiction of Jarl Olov. Bjorn joined the crew of the jarl's younger son Haakon's longship and went on to continue his career as a raider. Having developed a great sense of respect for his new captain, he agreed to follow him to England in order to start a new settlement, leaving his own family behind. Arriving at the abandoned Saxon longhouse that Haakon named "Ravensthorpe," he assisted with building the rest from the ground up. 

Sometime after his arrival in England, Bjorn came to love a Saxon woman and took her for his bride; however, their romance was short-lived as she died in agony while giving birth, neither mother nor child survived. Since then, he took no further bride and entertained bedmates in passing only. The loss weighs heavily upon him, but he channels his emotions into rage for battle, making him a lethal force. Though not wholly without compassion, he is a ruthless killing machine who vows to live and die by the blade in hopes of achieving Valhalla.

Born the son of an ealdorman, Wiglaf was never expected to ascend to the throne of Mercia; however, his predecessor, King Ludeca, launched an invasion of East Anglia and was killed along with all five of his ealdormen, leaving Wiglaf the most senior nobleman of royal blood alive in Mercia. He married the Lady Cynethryth, the late king's daughter and only person with a claim better than his own. However, Wiglaf refused to cede any amount power or influence to his wife. This worked for two years before the kingdom was besieged by Prince Ecgbert of Kent, who overthrew Wiglaf and sent him into exile. 


While forced to go into hiding the king plotted to retake his throne but could not muster the support to do so alone. His wife, however, seemed to inspire mass support and even that of the newly arrived force of Danes in the area, known as The Raven Clan, were able to come to an agreement with the queen. Together, they retook the kingdom of Mercia, and Wiglaf and Cynethryth were crowned a second time at Repton. 


Wiglaf's second reign was a great deal more stable than the first, overseeing the country at its apex economic standpoint and sustaining a military sizeable enough to maintain Mercia's independence, even against the powerful Kingdom of Wessex to the south. That being said, a great deal of Mercian territory was ceded to the Danes, allowing them autonomy while asserting that the land was still considered a part of Mercia--an alliance of sorts. 


It does not bring him pleasure being forced to share royal authority with his wife, but there is little that can be done to rectify the situation if he too wishes to remain in power. To the king's credit, he is not a warmonger like his predecessors and Mercia has known relative peace with its bordering kingdoms. It is his hope to one day pass an in-tact Mercia to their son, Wigmund.

Lady Cynethryth is the only surviving child of the late King Ludeca of Mercia, who died in battle trying to conquer the neighboring kingdom of East Anglia. The king died along with his heir, as well as all five ealdormen in Mercia, who were succeeded by their sons or kinsmen. Among them, one named Wiglaf possessed the strongest claim, and so he ascended as king, taking Cynethryth as his wife. Initially she approached the match with resistance, believing in her own right to become queen; however, she was persuaded to agree by the other ealdormen in efforts to provide stability to the realm. 

Wiglaf never forgot his bride's initial hesitation at consenting to marriage and did not wish to be regarded as second to her in right to holding Mercia's crown, so he refused to share authority and granted her no influence at court. Secretly, the queen seduced and conspired with Prince Ecgbert of Kent to usurp the throne, which he did for a time; however, Cynethryth betrayed Ecgbert and arranged a contract with the Danes of Ravensthorpe to assist with reclaiming Mercia in exchange for lands and autonomy. 

Together, the Danes and Mercian ealdormen crushed Ecgbert's forces, taking fortresses and towns one by one, splitting the silver (almost) equally. Ecgbert's body was found slain beneath a willow tree outside of Repton, resting atop his cape with his trousers down and manhood fully erect. His throat was slit, and the expression on his face was of complete shock. The next day, Wiglaf and Cynethryth were crowned again at Repton, and nine months later welcomed a strong healthy son, naming him Wigmund.

Cynethryth now wields a great deal of power in Mercia with full support of the nobility and backing of the Danes--whose independence she supports and raiding she blatantly ignores. The king and queen seldom share a bed, but he has yet to make an official public appearance without her at his side. Furthermore, the kingdom has experienced a state of prosperity and relative peace since the beginning of their second reign.
