A former province of the collapsed Roman Empire, Britain is a land of great wealth and fertile soil. The Island of Great Britain is the largest island in all of Europe, the largest of the British Isles, and ninth largest island in the world. It is dominated by a Maritime climate with little variation between seasons. Following the withdraw of Rome's legions, the land was heavily populated by sea-faring warriors from the Northwest of Continental Europe, chiefly the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. They were met with resistance by the native Britons, but mostly won out either forcing them northward or interbreeding with them.

The British Isles are made up of four primary regions, England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. The largest and most powerful of the four is the region of England, due in part to its bountiful harvests and more hospitable climate. Though recognized as the overall territory, England is divided into many smaller political regions and petty kingdoms: Wessex, Mercia, East Anglia, Northumbria, Cumberland, and Cornwallum.

Initially the native Britons had adopted the Christian church of Rome, but this was greatly replaced by the pagan practices of the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes; however, later missionaries were able to once more spread the Christian faith among the isles, making it the primary religious belief. Still, many held tight to the Old Ways and refused to be parted with their pagan spiritual beliefs.

Relations between the petty kingdoms of England were terse at best, each vying for control in hopes of becoming the dominant household of the land and uniting them all as one nation. Infighting was nearly constant in addition to struggles against the ravenous Picts of Scotland in the north and raids from barbaric Danes and Norse Viking groups envious of their wealth.
